Road Trip Kit {Tutorial}

My parents are currently on a very long road trip and my house was the first stop. Knowing my mom's tendency to crave snacks and my step-dad's affinity for pop-rock mixed CDs, I wanted to make them a road trip kit, to take with them the rest of the way.

This six-pack case had been hanging out in my craft room for awhile, waiting for the perfect occasion to be used. This was it. And just like the robot baby shower favors, this kit uses Starbucks Frappaccino bottles. They're piling up in my garage, so the more crafty ways to reuse them the better.

This kit is cute, portable, full of tasty snacks and road trip tunes - it's the perfect road trip companion. Best of all it's cheap. This easy gift was made from things I had laying around the house. The only thing I went out and bought specifically were the snacks (tailored to my parents tastes, of course).

Road Trip Kit Tutorial

You'll need:
- six pack drink carrier
- variety of cardstock
- double-stick tape
- exacto knife and scissors
- 6 Starbucks Frappaccino bottles
- spray paint
- spray paint primer (recommended)
- snacks
- CDs of your choice (preferably a super sweet road trip mix)

Start with a cardboard drink carrier. You could also use a 4-pack if you'd like.

Cut cardstock to fit the front and back of the six pack. Mine were 7 3/8" x 5 1/4".

Trace the sides of the carrier and cut out four pieces.

The last piece is to cover the handle. Cut a 5 1/2" x 7 3/8" piece of cardstock. Fold it in half lengthwise.

Take an exacto knife and cut off that little tab. Lay the handle over the folded cardstock and trace where the hole should be.

Then use an exacto knife to cut out the hole. My exacto knife skills need a little work, so please don't judge the less than clean lines.

Use double-stick tape to add the cardstock to the drink carrier. The six-pack will thank you for giving it a cute new outfit.

Wash out 6 Frappaccino bottles (I didn't bother to peel off the labels this time). Spray primer on the lids first, otherwise the paint may crack and not look smooth. Then spray paint the lids in the color you like best. I, personally, am obsessed with any shade of aqua, teal, or turquoise.

To cover up the Starbucks labels, cut scrapbook paper to 9 1/2" x 2 3/4". Wrap papers around the bottles and secure with double-stick tape.

Now fill those bottles with tasty snacks. It's the middle of summer, so I didn't want to put anything that would melt (like chocolate). I used Teddy Grahams, sunflowers seeds, pumpkin granola, wasabi soy almonds, and double the cheez-its, because my step-dad looooves cheez-its.

Print out labels to describe the snacks. There shouldn't be any surprises about what they're eating, especially when wasabi almonds are involved. I just sealed the labels to the bottles with a strip of glossy tape.

Make a pocket out of cardstock that will hold your CDs.

Secure the CD pockets with double-stick tape to both sides.

Finally, if you'd like, add a saying to one of the pockets.

    1. Sorry I didn't photograph that part, oops. I actually had square envelopes that came with the CDs and I just cut the top 1/3 off. Then I covered it with card stock to make the pocket.

If you don't have an envelope that will fit a CD, just make one. :) Here's an easy tutorial I found:

    1. Thanks for commenting, because I hadn't realized that I left out the link to my baby shower favors. I made them using the same bottles:

Most ideas I have for the bottles involve food and drinks. They're great for party favors filled with the candy of your choice. I've also thought about making a six pack gift with different flavor-infused olive oils.

    1. Reasons I like to use the Starbucks bottles:

      1. they have a wide mouth, so they're easy to fill
      2. they have reusable lids(vs. a bottle cap, which is one time use)
      3. they're glass, not plastic
      4. they're narrow enough to fit into 6-pack drink carriers
      5. I drink them, therefore I have a ton

I really can't think of any others that would work the same at the moment. If you find any, let me know! :)
